SHANGHAI PUDONG PENOY GARDEN | SHANGHAI
The Shanghai Pudong Peony Garden renovation project, guided by the philosophy of "Revitalizing Heritage through Modernity, Restoring Mountain-Water Harmony," has transformed a 7.8-hectare century-old private garden into an open public park. Through "acupuncture-style micro-renovation," six relocated historic buildings (e.g., Zhoupu Old Residence, Yu Clan Residence) were preserved, while walls were dismantled to integrate waterfront greenways, linking Senlan Greenbelt with surrounding communities to form a "one entrance, dual access" open layout. The park is divided into three zones: the southern lakeside activity area, central ecological buffer zone, and northern dense forest leisure area, connected by a four-tier trail system that weaves through hills, meadows, and historic structures. Ecological restoration efforts included revitalizing water systems, replanting peony fields, and restoring seasonal flora.
Key highlights include the adaptive reuse of historic buildings—such as converting Zhoupu Old Residence into the "A Garden" café—and the integration of traditional craftsmanship (e.g., mortise-and-tenon wood carvings) with modern functions. By 2025, new additions like the Senlan Art Education Space and botanical-themed libraries will host events such as peony festivals and regattas, creating a "park + culture" model. The project merges classical garden aesthetics with contemporary urban life (e.g., camping, markets), establishing itself as a "urban mountain-forest" that blends historical depth with ecological vitality in the Waigaoqiao area.
